Harry and Annie lived far from town, but they went there to school every day. On their way to school, there was a pond. In winter when the ice was thick and hard, they walked across the pond. But their mother did not like them to do this because it could be dangerous. “Don’t go across the pond today.” She said while she was kissing them goodbye one morning. “It is beginning to thaw. “All right, mother,” said Harry, not very happily because he enjoyed running and sliding on the ice. When they came to the pond, the ice looked hard and safe. Harry said to his sister. “I knew it didn’t thaw at all. Mother is always afraid we will drown. Come on, let’s have a good time sliding. The school bell will not ring for an hour.” “ But you promised mother,” said Annie.
“No, I didn’t.” I only said. “All right, and it is all right.” “ And I didn’t say anything. So I can do as I like,” said Annie.
So they stepped on the ice and started to go across the pond. They did not go far when the ice broke, and they fell into the water.
A man who was at work nearby saw them and jumped into the water to save them. Harry got out of the ice water himself, but poor Annie almost drowned before the man could reach her.

I Will Think of It
“I will think of it.” It is easy to say this, but do you know what great things have come from thinking? We cannot see our thoughts, or hear, or taste, or feel them, and yet they have great power.
Sir Isaac Newton was sitting in his garden on a summer evening when he saw an apple fall from a tree. He began to think. While tying to find out why the apple fell, he discovered how the earth, sun,
B.they didn’t remember the lesson D.they didn’t tell their mother the truth
moon, and stars are kept in their places. When a boy named James Walt watched the lid of the tea kettle moving up and down, he began to think. He wanted to find out why the steam in the kettle moved the heavy lid. From that time, he went out thinking and thinking, and when he became a man, he improved the steam engine so much that it could do the work of many horses easily.
A young man named Galileo was once standing in a big hall when he saw a chandelier moving back and forth. This set him thinking, and it led to the invention of the pendulum.
James Ferguson was a poor boy. Once, seeing the inside of a watch, he started to wonder. “I should make a clock,” he thought. But how could he get what he needed to make the clock? He thought and thought. Then he found out he could make the mainspring out of a piece of whalebone. Soon he made a wooden clock. When he became a man, he went to London to live and made a lot of
speeches there. Some of the smarted men in England listened to his speeches, his motto was, “I will think of it,” and he made his thoughts useful to himself and the world.
When you have a difficult lesson to learn, don’t feel discouraged. Think; and by thinking you will learn how to think to some purpose.
27. Sir Isaac Newton discovered how the earth, sun, moon, and stars are kept in their places when _________.
A.he tried to find out why the apple fell B.he saw a chandelier moving back and forth C.he found out he could make a wooden clock
D.he watched the lid of the tea kettle moving up and down 28. What do you know about James Ferguson from the passage?
A.He invented the pendulum and tea kettle. B.He liked listening to the famous men’s speeches. C.He was from a rich family and grew up in London.
D.He used a piece of whalebone to make the mainspring of a clock. 29. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A.To encourage people to think more. C.To show how great the four people are.
Now few businesses can run without computers. Schools even offer lessons for their students to
learn to write on computers. But what are we giving up as handwriting loses in importance in society? Researchers from Princeton University studied two groups of students. One group wrote out their notes in class while the other typed them with a computer. In order to show the differences between the two groups, researchers tested both groups of students 30 minutes after a lesson, and again a week later.
B.To offer some advice on how to think. D.To introduce the four people’s experiences.
The results showed that both group did well in the first lest. But students with the handwritten notes were able to better remember and understand the lesson a week later, and were more open to new ideas. According to the lead researcher. “Our findings suggest that even when computers are used as planned, they may still cause harm to your learning.”
Part of the reason for this is that notetakers using pen and paper could understand the lesson better and put what they heard in their own words Those taking notes on a computer typed faster, but they always tried to type every word exactly as they heard it, so they didn’t really pay enough attention to the content of the lesson. That’s the problem. Students chose to take notes with a computer because it could help them take notes faster, but it undermined learning. Computers aren’t going away anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean paper notebooks need to become out-of-date. In fact, its best to start using them at an early age. University of Indiana researchers compared brain scans of five-year-olds. Some of them practised writing letters down and some just looked at the letters. Those who wrote out the letters had better and even “adult-like” brain activity. So next time when you need to take notes, why not choose a pen and paper over a keyboard? It will do wonders for your memory.
30. Paragraph 3 mainly tells us _________ .
A.how difficult the tests were C.when the research finished
B.what the research showed us D.why students needed the tests
31. The underlined words undermined “learning” probably mean “_________”.

C.Student taking notes on a computer could type every word exactly. D.Students with the handwritten notes did better in the lesson a week later. 33. The writer probably agrees that _________.
A.handwriting makes people smarter
B.it’s better to take notes on computer B.made learning fun D.made learning natural

Around the world, about 450 million people are living with a mental (心理的) health problem right now. However, few people would like to talk about any mental health problem they have because they think it is a shame (羞耻).
To bring attention to mental health problems and help people to solve those problems, World Mental Health (WMH) Day was first celebrated in 1992. Now, more and more people celebrate WMH Day on 10th October.
It is important for us to look alter our own mental health. Do you know how good exercise is for mental health? Doing exercise and spending time in nature can really help to deal with worries and depression (沮丧). So why not go for a walk in a park or the countryside?
Your diet can also change how you feel. If you eat candies, cake, chocolate, etc., your blood sugar will rise and fall, making you feel angry and tired. Make sure you eat enough vegetables and fruit, and you may feel good. It’s also important to drink enough water—being thirsty (口渴) can make it difficult to think clearly.
Also, it’s good to spend time with other people. Talking to others and asking them for support can help to reduce (减少) the shame.
World Mental Health Day encourages us to pay more attention to both our own mental health and other people’s. Anything you do on WMH Day will help us all to better understand and support people with mental health problems.
