Background information:

Teaching aids: blackboard, chalk, a Map of China, a Map of World, word cards, pictures Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Daily Report (5min)
Topic: talk about the most favorite city or country you want to travel. Why?]
Step 2 Leading-in (10min)
Review the structure: where is …? It’s …
a) Show students the Map of China and use the structure to ask students the location of some cities. (E.g. Beijing, Hong Kong, Macao, Taipei)
E.g. T: where is Beijing on the map? S: It’s over there.
b) Pair work: Ask student to use the structure to make a conversation according to the map.
Step 3 learn the new words (20min)
a) Put a Map of World in English on the blackboard and ask students to talk about the locations of some foreign cities. One student comes to front.
E.g. T: what can you see in this picture?
S: Many countries.
T: Do you know these countries? S: It is China and that is America. T: where is London? S: It’s in England.
T: What language does English speak? S: English. T: Where is Canada?
S: Sorry, I don’t know.
b) Teacher put some cards of foreign countries and their capitals, cities and languages. E.g. Canada —— Toronto
France —— Paris —— French Japan —— Tokyo —— Japanese
The United States (America) —— New York Australia —— Sydney
Singapore, the United Kingdom (England)
c) Teach students to read the words and tell one by one and tell them the location of those foreign countries on the Map of World. d) Games: Guess and Match
Disorder the cards and read one word of a country and ask one student to find out the card of that word according to pronunciation. And then ask him to match the city or capital of that country.
Step 4 Practice (10min)
a) Use some famous foreign people to teach students how to use “where are you from?” “where does she lives?” “what language does she speak?”(Obama, Beckham)
b) Pair work: Imagine you have a pen pal from one of the countries above. Make a conversation with your partner. E.g.
A: This is my new pen pal. B: Where does she from? A: She’s from Japan. B: Where does she live? A: She lives in Tokyo.
B: What language does she speak? A: She speaks Chinese.
Optional activities: Group work: Quiz
In pairs, write ten quiz questions. Ask another pair these questions.
Homework
Imagine you have a pen pal. Try to write a letter to him to introduce yourself in some detail.
