Being a Moonlighter: Staying Up Late and Getting Through School
Hey there friends! I'm Timmy, a 5th grader who loves video games, skateboarding, and maybe staying up just a little too late sometimes. I know some of you might be night owls like me – staying up way past bedtime playing games, watching movies, or scrolling through social media. Us moonlighters have to be crafty to get through school the next day!
First up, let me just say that getting enough sleep is really important for kids our age. Not sleeping makes it hard to learn, focus, and even be a good friend. My mom is always nagging me about getting at least 9-10 hours per night. But I know how tempting it is to keep gaming or watching just one more video when your parents think you're asleep.
If you're going to be a committed moonlighter though, you gotta be smart about it. Here are some of my top tips for making it work:
Have a Backup Plan for Feeling Tired
Even if you stay up late, you have to be ready to pay attention in class the next day. Bring along supplies to help you
power through the fatigue. Drink lots of water and pack a healthy snack to nibble on if you start feeling dozey. Sometimes I'll bring gum or a chewy snack to keep me chewing and awake. Just don't let the teacher catch you!
You can also do little things to stay awake, like switching sitting positions frequently or doodling on a notebook (just make sure it looks like you're taking notes!). On really tough days, I've even given myself a pinch now and then to jolt myself awake. Not too hard though!
Train Yourself to Power Nap
The most effective way to quickly recharge is with a power nap. You have to get the timing right though. A nap that's too short won't let you rest enough, but if you nap too long you'll feel groggier than before.
The sweet spot for me is about 20-25 minutes of napping. I'll set a super quiet alarm to wake me up after that time. Then I'll do a few jumping jacks or splashes of cold water on my face to really wake myself up. If you get it right, a power nap can make you feel like a whole new person!
Use Times of Lower Brain Power Strategically
There are going to be periods during the day when your lack of sleep catches up with you and your brain just feels fried. For classes where you don't need as much mental energy, let yourself coast a little during those times.
For example, if I'm feeling really zombified in art class, I'll just doodle or focus on zoning out and resting my brain instead of putting too much effort into that class's projects. Save yourbursts of energy and concentration for core subjects like math, reading, and science where you really need to be awake. Ask for Mercy Projects/Homework
This one is a long shot, but if you have a teacher who is understanding, you could always try asking them for a light homework pass on nights when you were up too late. Or see if they'll let you do an easier version of a project or assignment. The key is being honest that you messed up by staying up too late, and that you'll try harder to get sleep in the future. If the teacher sees you're being responsible and it doesn't become a habit, they might cut you a break once in a while. Don't take advantage of their kindness though!
Those are some of my best tips as a night owl for making it through school days after staying up too late. At the end of the
day though, we all need to try getting more sleep on a regular basis. Losing too much sleep can make you sick, hurt your grades, and is just unhealthy overall. Everything is better when you're rested - you'll feel happier, think faster, and even have more energy to play!
So next time you're thinking of pulling an all-nighter gaming or bingeing shows, pause and ask yourself if it's really worth feeling like a zombie tomorrow. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't – just be a smart moonlighter about it. Get your fun in, but also get your sleep on! Your body, mind, and report card will thank you.
That's all from me, see you on the nightside!
