1. ?The line graphs below show the trends of fertilizer use in the world and several countries, which have major consumers of fertilizer in the global market.?Using information from the graphs, write a short report of the recent trend of fertilizer use in general and include details about the individual countries.?Write 120—140 words on your Answer Sheet.
正确答案: The world’s farmers used about 100 million tons of fertilizer in 2000, down from about 140 million tons in 1990. This was the fifth consecutive annual decline since the historical peak in 1990. Also, within the several years before 2000 a number of major food-producing countries, such as the former Soviet Union, India, and China, had reduced or barely increased their consumption of fertilizer. In China, which led the world in fertilizer use, farmers increased their reliance on fertilizer from around 28 million tons in 1995 to about 29 million tons in 2000. This gain was quite modest compared with the huge jumps in consumption that occurred during the decade following 1980. Consumption in America in 2000 was up slightly, from about 18 million tons to 19 million tons in
2000. This level of fertilizer use was still much below that during the early eighties. India, too, boosted consumption from 13 million tuna in 1995 to 14 million tons in 2000. But the recent growth in fertilizer use was kept almost to a minimum in view of the remarkable increase before 1990. Fertilizer use in the former Soviet Union continued declining in 2000, the 10th<上标> consecutive year of decline. From the peak use of around 27 million tons in 1990 to the 10 million tons of 2000, Soviet fertilizer use had fallen by more than half. To sum up, it is a reasonable conclusion that fertilizer use continued dropping on a global scale.

正确答案:Dear Mr. Fowler: Whenever an oil furnace breaks down in the winter, it means hardship for a family. I know how difficult it was for you the evening of December 3 when your furnace shut down around eight in the evening. Since we not only supply you oil but service your furnace as well, we always handle your heating emergencies as quickly as a service technician is available. And 24-hour service is offered to minimize the discomfort for your family. Naturally, on a very cold evening such as December 3, there will be a good number of heating emergencies. Given the volume of calls that evening, many customers had to wait, like you, three to four hours before a service technician arrived. The heating emergencies are serviced on a first call/first served basis. This policy seems fairest to all customers. Although we do understand your special concern for the comfort and safety of your infant, Mr. Fowler, we can’t accommodate your request for priority service in the case of future heating emergencies. Many other families we service face similar concerns—infants and small children, sick family members, and the elderly. It would not be fair for us to assign a special status to one customer at the expense of another. We will continue, however, to respond to heating emergencies at your home as quickly as we can, around the clock. We wish you and your family a happy and healthyNew Year ! Sincerely, Mark Slomin
