Recently, a student used his Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to film a female teacher scolding and tearing the work of aclassmate. The public discussion that the incident caused started on the Internet. However, when it came to the media'sattention, it quickly became a major topic in the education circles. The reactions so far suggest that the focus of the debatehas been on one question: whom to blame?
Teachers who are anxious to defend their professional dignity have tried to put the blame on the students. They mentionedtheir right to privacy(隐私)and for this reason they requested the Ministry of Education (MOE) to prohibit PDAs in schools. Onthe other hand, some parents and stu dents have taken a different position. They feel that the teacher is also at fault. Caughtup in the war of words between both sides, people are no longer in terested in the “truth” of the matter which seems nowunimportant. It was left to newspapers to discover the central point of the controversial issue, by stressing the problems thatare not always easily noticed in our educational system.
For those responsible for educating the young, this PDA incident conveys the message that “times have changed”,a realitythat must have been felt even more strongly by the female teacher when reflecting on this
unpleasant experience. Different times call for different professional approaches in education. The ability to understand thestudents they are teaching has always been the quality of successful teachers. Despite some factors, the incident shows thatthe teacher lacks good qualities on her part. Besides, the rules under current system to deal with recalcitrant students need to
be improved. Also, it is an example which shows the issue we are familiar with: what to do with new technology? With PDAs,the new technology, the interaction (交流)between the teachers and students in classroom has been changed.31.The author's purpo se in writing this passage is to________.A.improve the teacher's way of teachingB.stress the using of PDAs in the classroomC.change the students' behaviour in the classroomD.discuss the potential problems of educational system

D.What to do with new technology?B
Sometimes, the simplest ideas are the best. For example, to absorb heat from the sun to heat w ater, you need large, flat, black surfaces. One way to do that is to build those surfaces specially, on the roofs of buildings. But why go to all that troublewhen cities are full of black surfaces already, in the form of asphalt(柏油) roads?
Ten years ago, this thought came into the mind of Arian de Bondt, a Dutch engineer. He finally persuaded his boss to follow itup. The result is that their building is now heated in winter and cooled in summer by a system that relies on the surface of theroad outside.
The heat-collector is a system of connected water pipes. Most of them run from one side of the street to the other, just underthe asphalt road(柏油路). Some, however, dive deep into the ground.
When the street surface gets hot in summer, water pumped through the pipes picks up this heat and takes it undergroundthrough one of the diving pipes. At a depth of 100 metres lies a natural aquifer(蓄⽔层) into
which several heat exchangers(交换器) have been built. The hot water from the street runs through these exchangers, warming the ground-water, before returning to the surface through another pipe. The aquifer is thus used as a heat store. In winter, the working system is changed slightly. Water is pumped through the he at exchangers to pick up the heat storedduring summer. This water goes into the building and is used to warm the place up. After performing that task, it is pumpedunder the asphalt and its remaining heat keeps the road free of snow and ice.35. Which of the following is true according to the first two paragraphs?A. Arian de Bondt got his idea from his boss.
B. Large, flat, black surfaces need to be built in cities.C. The Dutch engineer’s system has been widely used.D. Heat can also be collected from asphalt roads.36. For what purpose are the diving pipes used?A. To absorb heat from the sun.B. To store heat for future use.
C. To turn solar energy into heat energy.D. To carry heat down below the surface.37. From the last paragraph we can learn that.A. some pipes have to be re-arranged in winter
B. the system can do more than warming up the buildingC. the exchangers will pick up heat from the street surfaceD. less heat may be collected in winter than in summer
38. What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows?A. What we shall do if the system goes wrong.B. What we shall do if there are no asphalt roads.C. How the system cools the building in summer.D. How the system collects heat in spring and autumn.C
You know how wonderful you are,and you know that others knowhow wonderful you are,but what do you do when admiration crossesover the line into jealousy? For most teens there will come a day whenyou realize that one of your friends is jealous and that this jealousy ishurting your friendship. When this happens it can seem like there isnothing that you can do,but the good news is that there is. Don't let
jealousy spoil your relationships. Tackle it head on and you might be back to normal much sooner than you think.
It can be hard to walk up to a friend and ask them what the problem is,but if you want to save your friendship you'll have todo just that. Don't approach them and ask why they are jealous of you (unless of course you want to appear totally
conceited),just take some time alone with them and let them know that you've been feeling like there's been somethingcoming between you. If they refuse to respond, then use the opportunity to explain how you have been feeling. Chances arethat something you say will strike a nerve and your friend will open up as well.
When you figure out what is annoying your friend, ask him or her what (s)he thinks would make the situation better. If,forexample,(s)he says that (s)he feels like (s)he doesn't get to spend any time with you because of your being off with yournew friends from the swim team then maybe you could invite her along the next time or block off one day a week for just thetwo of you. Remember, though, that whatever solution you decide on should be a compromise. Don't limit your own talentsor opportunities simply because your friend is unhappy. Try instead to include him or her in your new life and see how thatworks out.
Even the best of friendships can be tinged by jealousy. This destructive emotion is rarely productive and can turn best friendsinto worst enemies. Before taking extreme action, chat with your jealous friend to see if the two of you can work out acompromise. If you can't,be prepared to know exactly how far you will go to keep your friend and how far you won't.
39.According to the author,the jealousy emotion is ________.A.normal B.productiveC.destructive D.extreme
40.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a way to confront your friend when jealousy happens?A.Walking up to him/her and asking him/her why he/she is jealous of you.B.Walking up to him/her and asking him/her what the problem is.
C.Spending some time with him/her and letting him/her know how you feel.
D.Spending some time with him/her and letting him/her know you thi nk there's something coming between you.41.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?A.There's always a solution to solve the problem of jealousy.B.Jealousy can turn best friends into worst enemies.
C.You may lose a friend to keep your own gifts, chances or self development.D.You should go a long way with your friend to work out a solution42.The purpose of the passage is ________.A.to explain what causes jealousyB.to offer some advice on making friends
C.to introduce the way to cope with a jealous friendD.to explain how destructive the jealous emotion isD
Some years ago, writing in my diary used to be a usual activity.I would return from school and spend the expected half hourrecording the day's events, feelings, and impressions in my little blue diary.I did not really need to express my emotions byway of words, but I gained a certain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on paper. After all, isn'taccumulating memories a way of preserving the past?
When I was thirteen years old, I went on a long journey on foot in a great valley, well-equipped with pens, a diary, and acamera. During the trip, I was busy recording every incident, name and place I came across. I felt proud to be spending mytime productively, dutifully preserving for future generations a detailed description of my travels. On my last night there, Iwandered out of my tent, diary in hand. The sky was clear and lit by the glare of the moon, and the walls of the valley lookedthreatening behind their screen of shadows. I automatically took out my pen...
At that point, I understood that nothing I wrote could ever match or replace the few seconds I allowed myself to experiencethe dramatic beauty of the valley. All I remembered of the previous few days were the dull characterizations I had set down inmy diary.
Now, I only write in my diary when I need to write down a special thought or feeling. I still love to record ideas and quotationsthat strike me in books, or observations that are particularly meaningful. I take pictures, but not very often—only of objects Ifind really beautiful. I'm no longer blindly satisfied with having something to remember when I grow old. I realize that life willsimply pass me by if I stay behind the camera, busy preserving the present so as to live it in the future.I don't want to wake up one day and have nothing but a pile of pictures and notes. Maybe I won't haveas many exact representations of people and places; maybe I'll forget certain facts, but at least the
experiences will always remain inside me. I don't live to make memories—I just live, and the memories form themselves.43.Before the age of thirteen, the author regarded keeping a diary as a way of________.A.observing her school routine
B.expressing her satisfactionC.impressing her classmatesD.preserving her history
44.What caused a change in the author's understanding of keeping a diary?A.A dull night on the journey.B.The beauty of the great valley.C.A striking quotation from a book.D.Her concerns for future generations.45.What does the author put in her diary now?A.Notes and beautiful pictures.B.Special thoughts and feelings.C.Detailed a ccounts of daily activities.D.Descriptions of unforgettable events.
46.The author comes to realize that to live a meaningful life is________.A.to experience it
B.to live the present in the futureC.to make memories
D.to give accurate representations of it[来

We already know the fastest, least expensive way to slow climate change:Use less energy. With a little effort, and not muchm oney, most of us could reduce our energy diets by 25 percent or more—doing the Earth a favor while also helping ourwallets.
Not long ago, my wife, PJ, and I tried a new diet—not to lose a little wei ght but to answer an annoying question about climatechange. Scientists have reported recently that the world is heating up even faster than predicted only a few years ago, andthat the consequences could be severe if we don’t keep reducing emissions(排放) of carbon dioxide(CO2) and othergreenhouse gases that are trapping heat in our atmosphere.
We decided to try an experiment. For one month we recorded our personal emissions of CO2. W e wanted to see how muchwe could cut back, so we went on a strict die t. The average US household(家庭) produces about 150 pounds of CO2 a dayby doing common-place things like turning on air-conditioning or driving cars. That’s more than twice the European averageand almost five times the global average, mostly because Americans drive more and have bigger houses. But how muchshould we try to reduce?
For an answer, I checked with Tim Flannery, author of The Weather Makers:How Man Is Changing the Climate and What ItMeans for Life on Earth. In his book, he had challenged readers to make deep cuts in personal emissions to keep the worldfrom reaching extremely important tipping points, such as the melting(融化) of the ice sheets in Greenland or West Antarctica.“To stay below that point, we need to reduce CO2 emissions by 80 percent, “ he said.
Good advice, I thought. I’d opened our bedroom windows to let in the wind. We’d gotten so used to keeping our air-conditioning going around the clock. I’d almost forgotten the windows even opened. We should not let this happen again. It’s timefor us to change our habits if necessary.
47. Why did the author and his wife try a new diet?A. To take special kinds of food.B. To respond to climate change.
C. To lose weight.D. To improve their health.
48. The underlined words “tipping points” most probably refer to “”.A. freezing pointsB. burning pointsC. melting pointsD. boiling points
49. It can be inferred from the passage that.
A. it is necessary to keep the air-conditioning on all the timeB. it seems possible for every household to cut emissions of CO2
C. the average US household produces about 3, 000 pounds of CO2 a monthD. the average European household produces about 1, 000 pounds of CO2 a month50. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?A. Saving Energy Starts at HomeB. Changing Our Habits Begins at WorkC. Changing Climate Sounds ReasonableD. All people need and want things. What one person needs and wants may be different from the needs and wants of anotherperson. When people live together in a family or even in a city, these different needs and wants can lead to conflicts. To
make living together easier, good manners have developed over the years. Good manner, .re ways of treating people so thatpeople feel hotter about themselves and about each other, and so that conflicts don′t become serious.
When someone does something for us or gives us something, saying \"thank you\" is good manners. When we hurt someone, saying \"I'm sorry\" is also good manners. It is good manners to say \"excuse me\" if we pass very closely in front of someone, orif we need to get another person's attention. Good manners, then, can be found in saying \"thank you\" \"I'm sorry\me,\" .Good manners are also actions.
When we give someone else our seat on a crowded bus, when we hold the door open for another person to walk through, when we wait our turn, when we walk on the right-hand side of the mall or sidewalk, or when we knock before opening theclosed door of a room, those things show good manners. When we meet someone for the first time, it is good manners tosmile and say \"hello\" and give our name. When people come to our house, it's good manners to greet them with a smilewhen they come, and to say something like \"thank you for coming\"when they go home.
Sometimes, good manners can be the things we don't do. When we don't talk with a full mouth, or interrupt, or cut into a line, that is showing good manners. When we don^t try to get the attention of someone on the telephone, that's good manners, too.People often feel \"not quite right\". Some are in favor of staying at home. They think it's both convenient and comfortable. What's more, they can save money forother purposes. But they will lose the chance of getting to know the outside world. However, others prefer to go out for
traveling since it can increase their knowledge and broaden the ir horizons. But they will spend more money and meet somedifficulties while traveling.
