Coffee has a history dating back to at least the 9th century and has been a catalyst for social interaction across cultures and eras. Originally discovered in Ethiopia, coffee beans were brought into the Middle East by Arab traders, spreading to Egypt, Yemen, Persia, Turkey, and North Africa by the 15th century. Muslim merchants eventually brought the beans to the thriving port city of Venice, where they sold them to wealthy Italian buyers. Soon, the Dutch began importing and growing coffee in places like Java and Ceylon (largely through slave labor), and the British East India Trading Company was popularizing the beverage in England. Coffee spread across Europe and even reached America.

Where there has been coffee, there has been the coffeehouse. From the 15th century Middle Eastern establishments where men gathered to listen to music, play chess, and hear recitations from works of literature, to Paris' Cafe le Procope where luminaries of the French Enlightenment such as Voltaire, Rousseau, and Diderot came to enjoy a hot cup of joe, coffeehouses have traditionally served as centers of social interaction, places where people can come to relax, chat, and exchange ideas.

The modern coffee shop is modeled on the espresso and pastry-centered Italian coffeehouses that arose with the establishment of Italian-American immigrant communities in major US cities. New York coffee shops were often frequented by the Beats in the 1950's. It wasn't long before Seattle and other parts of the Pacific Northwest were developing coffee shops as part of a thriving counterculture scene. The Seattle-based Starbucks took this model and brought it into mainstream culture.

Although coffeehouses today continue to serve their traditional purpose as lively social hubs in many communities, they have noticeably adapted to the times. Rediscovering their purpose as centers of information exchange and communication, many coffee shops now provide their customers with internet access and newspapers. It has become extremely common to see someone sitting at a Starbucks listening to music or surfing the web on his or her laptop.

Today, big business retail coffee shops are expanding quickly all over the world. Starbucks alone has stores in over 40 countries and plans to add more. Despite its popularity, Starbucks has been criticized and labeled by many as a blood-sucking corporate machine, driving smaller coffee shops out of business through unfair practices. This has even spawned an anti-corporate coffee counterculture, with those subscribing to this culture boycotting big business coffee chains. Increasingly popular coffee stores such as The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf are also giving Starbucks some stiff competition. In any case, it seems pretty clear that coffee has weaved itself into the fabric of our consumer-oriented culture.

59. Which of the following is the correct order of coffee spreading in history? ①Egypt ②America ③the Middle East ④Netherlands ⑤Venice A. ①③④②⑤ B. ③①⑤④② C. ①⑤④③②

We have seen that humor and laughter positively influence our body in many ways, but little research has been done on whether a better sense of humor actually helps keep you from getting sick. However, since people with a better sense of humor have higher IgA levels, and since research has shown that those with higher levels of salivary(唾液的) IgA are less likely to get colds or be infected with Streptococcus, humor should reduce the frequency of colds.

The only study to directly examine this question found that the impact of one’s sense of humor upon colds depends on the kind of sense of humor you have. It was only individuals whose sense of humor took the form of seeking out and appreciating humor who had fewer and less severe colds/flu than their low humor counterparts. Surprisingly, those whose sense of humor took the form of initiating humor more often did not have fewer or less severe colds/flu. The researchers argued that being a person who likes to tell jokes or otherwise initiate humor takes them into more frequent contact with other people, which serves to expose them to infectious agents more often, robbing them of the advantage that a more active sense of humor otherwise offers. Obviously, more research is required to clear up this confusing picture.

The importance of active use of one’s sense of humor in producing humor’s health benefits was confirmed in another study in an unusual way. It found that among a group of mothers with newborn infants, those who actively used humor to cope with the stress in their lives had fewer upper respiratory infections and their infants also had fewer infections. This seemed to be because these mothers had higher levels of immunoglobulin A (免疫球蛋白A) in their

breast milk.

Among adults, if we look at bodily symptoms alone, independent of any diagnosed illness, there is some evidence that individuals who have more negative reactions to humor report more bodily symptoms and complaints. Students complaining of cardiovascular(心脏血管的) symptoms and gastroenterological (肠胃病的) symptoms also have been shown to have this more negative reaction to humor.

63. What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. People with a good sense of humor get sick less often. B. Humor can reduce the frequency of colds / flu.

C. Any form of humor can prevent people from getting sick. D. Humor can treat illness.

64. According to the passage, IgA is _______. A. a medicine

B. enzyme

C. factor

D. measure

65. Why do newborn infants whose mothers use humor to deal with stress have fewer infections? A. Because they don't often get upper respiratory infections. B. Because they are stronger since they were born.

C. Possibly because of the higher levels of immunoglobulin A in their breast milk. D. Because their mothers take better care of them.

66. Students with some bad bodily symptoms show ___________ towards humor. A. a positive attitude

B. a negative attitude

C. a neutral attitude

D. an unclear attitude

John Blanchard stood up from the bench, straightened his Army uniform, and studied the crowd of people making their way through Grand Central Station. He looked for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn’t, the girl with the rose.

His interest in her had begun thirteen months before in a Florida library. Taking a book off the shelf he found himself intrigued, not with the words of the book, but with the notes penciled in the margin. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind. In the front of the book, he discovered the previous owner’s name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort he located her address. She lived in New York City. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond. The next day he was shipped overseas for service in World War II.

During the next year and one month the two grew to know each other through the mail. Each letter was a seed falling on a fertile heart. A romance was budding. Blanchard requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn’t matter what she looked like.

When the day finally came for him to return from Europe, they scheduled their first meeting -- 7:00 PM at the Grand Central Station in New York. “You’ll recognize me,” she wrote, “by the red rose I’ll be wearing on my lapel.” So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for a girl whose heart he loved, but whose face he’d never seen.

I’ll let Mr. Blanchard tell you what happened: A young woman was coming toward me, her figure long and slim. Her blonde hair lay back in curls from her delicate ears; her eyes were blue as flowers. Her lips and chin had a gentle firmness, and in her pale green suit she was like springtime come alive. I started toward her, entirely forgetting to notice that she was not wearing a rose. As I moved, a small, attractive smile curved her lips. “Going my way, sailor?” she murmured.

Almost uncontrollably I made one step closer to her, and then I saw Hollis Maynell. She was standing almost directly behind the girl. A woman well past 40, she had graying hair tucked under a worn hat. She was more than

plump, her thick-ankled feet thrust into low-heeled shoes. The girl in the green suit was walking quickly away. I felt as

though I was split in two, so keen was my desire to follow her, and yet so deep was my longing for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned me and upheld my own.

And there she stood. Her pale, plump face was gentle and sensible, her gray eyes had a warm and kindly twinkle. I did not hesitate. My fingers gripped the small worn blue leather copy of the book that was to identify me to her.

This would not be love, but it would be something precious, something perhaps even better than love, a

friendship for which I had been and must ever be grateful. I squared my shoulders and saluted and held out the book to the woman, even though while I spoke I felt choked by the bitterness of my disappointment. “I'm Lieutenant(中尉)John Blanchard, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you could meet me; may I take you to dinner?”

The woman's face broadened into a tolerant smile. “I don't know what this is about, son,” she answered, “but the young lady in the green suit who just went by, she begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I should go and tell you that she is waiting for you in the big restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!”

It's not difficult to understand and admire Miss Maynell's wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in its response to the unattractive. “Tell me whom you love,” Houssaye wrote, “And I will tell you who you are.” 67. How did John Blanchard get to know Miss Hollis Maynell? A. They lived in the same city.

B. They were both interested in literature. C. John knew Hollis's name from a library book.

D. John came across Hollis in a Florida library.

68. Hollis refused to send Blanchard a photo because _____. A. she thought true love is beyond appearance

B. she wasn't confident about her appearance C. she was only a middle-aged woman

D. she had never taken any photo before they knew

69. When Blanchard went over to greet the woman, he was _____. A. disappointed but well-behaved B. satisfied and confident C. annoyed and bad-mannered D. embarrassed but concerned 70. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. Changeable Women B. The Symbol of Rose C. A Blind Love D. A Test of Love

Commercial advertisement was once thought of as a technique of the marketers to inform the potential buyers about the availability of certain products. It was seen more as a medium to inform the buyers rather than persuade them to buy. The present day marketers see advertisement as a medium to damage the image of their competitors and their products. This indeed, is an undesirable and an immoral practice. Instead of speaking about their own products, these marketers speak about the drawbacks (often without any basics) of the competing products.

People watching TV advertisements would notice that there has always been an advertisement war between the marketers of different consumer goods. A few such cases are given below.

1. Parachute Coconut Oil vs. V.V.D. Gold

Some time back, the producer of V.V.D Gold Coconut Oil claimed in their TV advertisement that only their

products was superior and the one sold in blue colour bottles (the reference was to Parachute coconut oil) was suitable only for un-natural hair.

2. Tata Salt vs. Captain Cook

Tata salt was first iodised (碘处理) salt marketed by an Indian Company. It has been enjoying a good and steady market. Captain Cook, another producer of iodised salt, who entered the market later, had to adopt some strategy to get control of the market. The TV advertisement of Captain Cook stressed on ‘Free flow’ of their salt when transferred to a container. The producer of Tata Salt retaliated (报复) by saying that the claim of Captain Cook was a trick and those who were quality conscious should deal with it with caution.

3. Pepsi vs. Coco Cola

Coca Cola was selected as the official soft drink for the Wills World Cricket 1996. When the cricket series was on, the marketers of Pepsi constantly advertised on TV. Their advertisement gave the idea that the cricketers preferred only Pepsi and as a matter of fact there was nothing official about it.

4. Horlicks vs. Complan

Sometime back, the TV advertisement of Complan, a health drink directly attacked Horlicks, which has been in the market for several decades. The claim of Complan was that their brand (which according to them was Brand C) has a higher percentage of ingredients (材料) compared to Brand H (reference was nothing but to Horlicks).

The above examples clearly show how the technique of advertisement is misused by some marketers to ruin the image of their competitors. This, certainly, is not a healthy trend.

Any marketer should only speak about his products and not about his competitors’ products. The awareness of consumers has certainly increased over the years and they are no longer easily taken in. There are many consumer products like salt, oil shaving blades etc. But one thing for sure is that offering the same product in a different container will not make the product different.

Mass media like Radio, Television and newspaper should not allow advertisements that tell lies. Legal regulations, in this regard, should also be made stricter. Comparison of the past and the present of advertisements In the past At present A technique mainly used for offering (71) ▲ A trick used as a means of unfair (72) ▲ The (73) ▲ of advertisement Products Wrong practices V.V.D. 第六部分 书面表达(满分15分)

阅读下面的短文,然后按要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually decreased. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father

suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, “You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave scars just like these. And no matter how many times you say you're sorry, the wounds will still be there.” 写作内容:

1. 以“Anger management”为题约30个词概括上文的主要内容。 2. 谈谈你的想法(120词),内容包括: (1)你自己的一次亲身经受;

(2)分析生气心情可能产生的后果(一到两点); (2)就如何把握生气心情提出建议(一到两点)。

A father got his son to hammer a nail whenever he lost his temper. Eventually, the boy learned to control his anger and understood that anger could do harm to others. (31 words)

The story reminds me of one of my own experiences. I once quarreled with my best friend. I was so angry that I said many cruel words. I apologized later but we are no longer best friends.

Poor anger managemen has many disadvantages. Those who can’t control their anger are unlikely to get along well with others. What’s worse, they can experience problems like anxiety, depression and even violence, which of course has a bad effect on the quality of their life.

As high school students, we should learn to control our anger. Firstly, remember to calm down when in trouble because anger can’t help solve the problem. Secondly, when others do wrong to us, we should learn to forgive and forget. (155 words)

W: The IOC President Thomas Bach announced the winner just now. M: What winner?

W: No, I haven’t. Can I choose the color of the car?

M: Sure. We have Toyata Corollas in black, red and silver. W: I don’t like black or red.

W: Can you recommend a good tailor? M: Yes, why?

W: I want a new overcoat for the winter. M: Oh, how about the tailor near my school?

W: I don’t think that one is very good. I had a dress made there, but it pulled open under the arms a few days later. M: Why didn’t you go back and reason with the tailor?

W: I did, but he refused to do anything about it and quarreled with me. In the end, I had to talk to the manager. M: What did he say?

W: He said he would see what he could do. M: Well, that’s good.

W: But I don’t want to have the same kind of trouble. Do you know any other tailors in town? M: Well, there’s one next to the 6th Department Store. He’s said to be very good. W: Could you take me there someday?

M: Certainly. How about next Sunday morning? W: OK. That’s very kind of you. Text 9

W: A month is a long time to be away. Well, do you have any children? M: I have two, a boy and a girl. Would you like to see a picture of them? W: Sure…Oh, how nice! Now, who’s this?

M: This is Jane, my beautiful daughter. She’s twenty-four. W: Is she married?

M: No. She is studying engineering at Cambridge University. She will graduate this June. And she has gotten a position with IBM. W: What an excellent girl!

M: So she is! And this is my son, James. W: How old is he?

M: He is twenty-one. He’s in college now. That’s my wife, Beth, a college teacher. W: Wow, you certainly have a lovely family! M: Thank you. So, tell me about your family.

W: My husband and I have a daughter, Tina. She is a lovely girl and she likes playing the piano. But I don’t have a photo with me.

M: Well, it seems that you miss your daughter very much. W: Yes. I haven’t seen her for nearly two weeks. Text 10

If you visit America, you should be aware of some of the American customs and habits. All restaurants in America accept cash for payment, and most also accept credit cards. You will seldom find a restaurant that accepts checks. It is common to have to wait for a table in a popular restaurant.

There are many popular restaurants that do not accept reservations, or will only accept reservations for large parties, for example, six or more people. Many restaurants in America have a license to serve alcohol. The drinking age in America is 21.

Tipping is another common custom. American restaurants do not add a service charge to the bill. Therefore, it is expected that the customer will leave a tip for the server. The common practice is to leave a tip that is equal to 15% of the total bill for acceptable service, and about 20% for superior service. Smoking in America is not always considered to be a good social habit. Smoking in public is not as common in America as in many other countries. Generally, Americans smoke less than Europeans and much less than Asians. It is a fact that smoking is becoming less and less socially acceptable. Smoking is forbidden in many places.
