What were you doing when UFO arrived?
Good morning, dear teachers:
I am the candidate No. 3 applying for the middle school English teacher. Today my topic is “what were you doing when UFO arrived “.
It is my great honor to be here to give you my presentation. To make my presentation much clearer, I’ll describe my thoughts in the following aspects: analysis of teaching materials, analysis of students, learning methods, teaching methods, teaching procedures and blackboard layout.
Now I am going to present them one by one.
“What were you doing when UFO arrived “is the first lesson of unite 3 in book 8. It mainly tells a story about Jack who were coming upon UFO. The function of this part is to let students learn how to grasp the structure of the text, and know how to summarize the main idea of the text.
Based on the new curriculum standard, the teaching objectives are as follows:
Knowledge objectives:
In this part, three things will be mastered. First, words like ‘UFO’ ‘imagine’ ‘museum’, phrases like ‘turn off’ ‘get out’, sentences patterns such as ‘be used to do sth’.

Skills objectives
In this part, students will be taught to communicate with others about UFO, to cooperate with friends and to deal with difficult situations.
Emotional objectives
Emotional objectives aim to arouse students’ curiosity about UFO and improve their ability to think themselves and upgrade their learning skills.
Important and difficult teaching points:
Grammar points, such as the usage of past continuous tense, the usage of present. As for the contents, students should know the background, main idea, the development and the result of this story.
Analysis of students:
As we know, if you want to have a deep understanding of this text, it is very important to have a better understanding of the students. Next, I will analysis the students.
Students in grade 8 have studied English at least more than 5 years and they have had certain knowledge about English learning. What’s more, they have full passion to learn, to show their ability and to develop their abstract thinking.

Teaching methods:
According to the students’ physiological and psychological characteristics, I adopt 2 teaching methods, that is, situational teaching method, communicative approach to cultivate students’ ability to discuss questions, finding answers.
Learning methods:
As for students, students can get comprehensive language using skills by automatic learning, cooperating, exploring and so on. With those methods, it can make class active and stimulate students’ enthusiasms.
Teaching procedures:
Teaching procedures are the core of this presentation. So next, I will emphasize on talking about teaching procedures: As we know, a good lead in can create happy atmosphere, broaden students’ horizon and stimulate students’ eagerness. And many of our middle school students are absorbed in drawing pictures and watching movies .Therefore, first, I will invite students to draw the UFO or alien in their imagination and share with others about their ideas .Second, I will design a group discussion on UFO movies, such as “the alien’’ ‘’the ninth space ‘’to stimulate their interest in UFO and get a few information from it. When they totally emerge themselves in the topic, I will ask them a question ‘’what were you ding when UFO arrived?’’ Then naturally lead to our topic today.

In the pre-reading part, I will give them 2minutes to read the passage themselves and pick out difficult words form the text. Then I will analysis these words one by one.
In the while-reading part, in order to train students’ group work ability and stimulate their imagination, I would ask students to have a 3 minutes’ discussion to list out what Jack was doing when UFO arrived. After a skinny acknowledgement of the UFO, the key point of my lesson would turn to the grammar of this lesson. There are 2 main grammar points: past continuous tense and sentence pattern “when…’’ ‘’while …’’. I would create a situation to let the student translate the sentence what I say and consolidate the sentence pattern with examples.
In the post-reading part, I would encourage students to retail this story by using their own words.
The last part of my presentation is summary. In this part, I would invite students to share what they have learned today and give them my suggestions.
Homework
The homework of lesson is to let student collect the information about UFO and design a picture of alien in their imagination.
